Ms. Lacey's Discipline and Management Policy

Our goal is to create a classroom environment that allows for the greatest possible academic and social growth for ALL students. Our discipline policy will be introduced and reinforced in a fair, firm, and consistent manner. For this to occur, a discipline policy must be in place.

Our Promise:

When we respect each other and our classroom, we cooperate with one another, listen carefully, help each other learn, work hard, and have fun together. We understand that everyone makes mistakes, that we should stand up for ourselves and others, and when someone asks us to stop, we stop. This is who we are even when no one is watching!

How it Works:

Our behavior management system will allow students to visually track their behavior. Our students will monitor their behavior using a clothespin clip chart. Each student will be assigned a clothespin so he/she can visually monitor his/her behavior choices. Every morning, the clothespins will be placed at the middle of the chart on “Ready to Learn.” Throughout the day, appropriate actions, attitudes, and behaviors will allow a student to “CLIP UP.” However, inappropriate actions, attitudes, and behaviors will result in a student to “CLIP DOWN.”

This system allows us to acknowledge appropriate behaviors while also encouraging those who need to improve their behavior. Students who “CLIP DOWN” are offered support and can improve their behavior. They can “CLIP UP” once behaviors become appropriate. At the end of the day, we will record their color on the calendar in the B.E.E Binder.

Student Expectations:

Students are expected to come to school “Ready to Learn” each day. Students are expected to be responsible, be respectful, and be safe.

Be RESPONSIBLE:

  • Listen to learn.
  • Complete work to their BEST ability.
  • Participate in classroom activities.
  • Stay on task.
  • Be a responsible citizen.

Be RESPECTFUL:

  • Respect all faculty members.
  • Respect their peers.
  • Cooperate in pair and group settings.

Be SAFE:

  • Follow directions.
  • Practice self-discipline.
  • Help keep the room/school clean and organized.

  • Students who meet these expectations will have opportunities to move their clip up the chart.
  • Students who do not meet these expectations will be given redirection. The teacher will discuss with the student ways to improve their current behavior. If the student continues to not improve after redirection, the student will move their clip down the chart. However, the student is still given the opportunity to improve their behavior, and clip back up the chart. The teacher will use the BES Behavior Codes to note the behavior on the monthly calendar.

Let Us Celebrate Our Success!

Students who end the day above “Ready to Learn” could experience additional awards or praises deemed appropriate by the teacher. Here are some possibilities when a student ends the day/week on:

  • “Good Day”, “Great Job”, “Outstanding”, “Top of the Chart”,
    • Choose an item from the Treat Box.
    • Positive note or Dojo message.
    • Dojo Point(s) or House Point(s)
    • Positive email or phone call to guardian.
  • When a student has had an above and beyond day, they will be sent to the principal with a note to be recognized for their positive day.

Let Us Reflect & Grow!

If students end the day below “Ready to Learn” they will be given the time to reflect and hopefully grow from their choices in the future. Here are some consequences when a student ends the day on:

  • “Think About It”- BLUE
    • Brief discussion with the teacher.
    • If students end on “Think About It” before recess, they will sit out their first 5 minutes of recess in order to reflect on the behavior.
  • “Teacher’s Choice”-PURPLE
    • Student may complete a reflection sheet.
    • Student will lose some choices/activity options.
    • Student reflects on his/her behavior.
    • If students end on “Teacher’s Choice” before recess, they will participate their first 10 minutes of recess by walking and reflect on their daily choices.
  • “Parent Contact”-PINK
    • Teacher will contact the guardians via email or phone.
    • Student will lose some choices/activity options.
    • If students end on “Parent Contact” before recess, they will participate their first 15 minutes of recess by walking and reflect on their daily choices.
    • A student will be sent to the office if they are a safety concern.

Everyone Gets What They Need:

Our classroom will have different needs at different times. Sometimes our class will have additional behavior management techniques and strategies in place with the clip chart system. Here are some possibilities:

  • Group/Table Tally Points
  • House Points
  • Punch Cards/ Tickets
  • Individual Student Sticker Charts
  • Quiet Pom-Pom Critters
