Kindergarten Essentials 

What your child should be able to do to be ready for 1st Grade!

Reading and Language Arts Skills 

 

Can name all upper and lowercase letters. 

 

Can give sound for all letters. 

 

Can write all upper and lowercase letters from memory. 

 

Can read sight words from Fry List 1 and List 2. 

 

Can write sight words from Fry List 1 and List 2. 

 

Can retell stories with details from the beginning, middle, and end. 

 

Can retell the main idea and 3 key details from informational stories. 

 

Can name the beginning, middle, and ending sounds when hearing a word. (What sound is at the beginning of cat, etc.) 

 

Can add or change letters /sounds in words to make new words. (Change cat to bat to bit to sit to sip to slip, etc.) 

 

Read 3-letter (CVC) words (ran,wet, pig, fox, sun, etc.) 

 

Write 2-letter (VC or CV) and 3-letter (CVC) words (in, go, hot, etc.) 

 

Draw and write 1-3 sentences to tell about an event.

Math Skills 

 

Can count to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Count backward from 10-1. 

 

Can count on from any given number to 100.(Start at 33, start at 78...) 

 

Can write numbers 0-20 when given a number. 

 

Can count objects 0-20 and write the number to tell how many. 

 

Can make teen numbers by making a group of 10 and telling how many extra ones. (10 and 3 more make 13.) 

 

Can add and subtract within 10 using objects or drawings. 

 

Can break apart numbers up to 10 into smaller parts. (5 objects can be broken into 3 and 2) 

 

Can make 10 with objects, drawings, or equations. (7 and 3, 8 and 2) 

 

Can quickly add and subtract within 10 (practice mental strategies like counting on in their head, think 6 plus 2 more makes 8)
